William B. & Virginia (Thrall) Smith

As pointed out by one of our readers, the Smiths resided in Hartford, Connecticut and were hosts to several of the Chinese students, there.

In his book, Stepping Forth into the World, Edward Rhoads writes: “William B. Smith, a carriage manufacturer turned farmer, and his wife, Virginia (Thrall) Smith, a “city missionary,” who took in three boys from Springfield, Liang Ruhao, Tang Shaoyi, and Huang Yaochang…”
